He motioned for me to come over. It wasn't until I was standing beside them that I realized it was Nelda. The man beside her had to be Tom. Beads of sweat ran down Tom's forehead. He dabbed at it with his handkerchief. "Jeffy, you've grown so much," Nelda said. She was wearing a hat with a veil down over her eyes.

My torch.  . but I didn't remember putting it out. Suddenly, the lure of the fire faded and I tried to pull the kid back to the swings. He resisted and broke from me. "That's him," I heard Mr. Johnson yell. I turned to escape, but I couldn't move. I stood there like Lot's wife hoping to turn to salt. When I turned around, Mr. Johnson was bustling across the yard with my burned out torch in his hand. Water dripped from the blackened can. The superintendent followed. " he demanded.
