He dropped the criterion of fertility, arguing that Caucasians and Negroes were morphologically distinct species that possessed different susceptibilities to disease (Erickson 1997c). He produced evidence purportedly showing that individuals with mixed racial heritages, such as mulattos, experienced higher mortality and shorter life expectancies than individuals of either parent race (Nott 1843). This echoed a claim made a year earlier by Edward Jarvis (1842), a Southern physician who argued that the incidence of insanity was ten times greater among the Free Negroes in the North than among slave populations in the South; from this, Jarvis “deduced that slavery must have had a wonderful influence upon the development of the moral faculties and intellectual powers of the individual [Negro]” (Stanton 1960:58).

However, this “agrarian utopia was destroyed, or rather aborted,” as Henry Nash Smith (1950:191) perceptively noted, “by the land speculator and the railroad monopolist. ” By the 1870s, more than a dozen cities from Pittsburgh and Chicago to Kansas City were industrial centers that belonged to the new age of steam and steel rather than to the agrarian past. The wilderness beyond the agricultural frontier, which had receded steadily earlier in the century, was closed. Westward expansion, which ultimately caused the disappearance of free land, also eliminated the safety valve that relieved poverty in the East and that promoted equality and democracy as members of the urban poor and middling classes became Midwestern farmers.

It may well serve to remind us that we owe our present condition, with its multiple means of safety and of happiness, to the struggles, the sufferings, the heroic exertions and the patient toil of our barbarous, and more remotely, of our savage ancestors. Their labors, their trials and their successes were a part of the plan of the Supreme Intelligence to develop a barbarian out of a savage, and a civilized man out of this barbarian (Morgan 1877/1963:563). Morgan also employed a concept of uneven social development.
